FAQs - Hanu HRV

Troubleshooting

Our app is now called Hanu HRV. It can only be downloaded from the Test Flight app, not the App Store. But do not worry, just click this getting started guide and you’ll be good to go with Hanu HRV!

For Beta users, prepaid users and users before October 2023

When you originally purchased your Hanu device (Polar H10), it included a one year prepaid subscription which automatically rolled over to a monthly subscription at the end of that year. You have the option to cancel your subscription at any time via our Hanu HRV subscription manager. You can also refer to our getting started guide if you want to try it out again!

If you would like to cancel your subscription, please login to our subscription manager.

No problem! We can help you out. Hanu HRV works exclusively with the Polar H10, but we no longer sell them on our site. You can get another one directly from the company here. Alternatively, you can buy a Polar H10 from Amazon, eBay or any other online retailer.

We advise using one device and app that you feel meets your needs and not trouble yourself with comparing them the way you could compare Heart Rate for example. With HRV, the devices will never match up because the data output is based on a complicated mathematical formula (HRV RMSSD) that takes a snapshot in time. It is our belief that you will be better off comparing your data within one device.

Getting started is easy! Just head to GETTING STARTED and you can follow our easy two step process with guided videos.

First, you must be wearing the device in order for it to connect and sync. It requires your heartbeat in order to capture data and connect. You will NOT be able to connect to your Polar H10 if you are not wearing it.

Second, please go to the bluetooth settings of your phone. You should be able to see your Polar H10 with a status of Connected, Not Connected or in the Other Devices area. If you don’t see it, please move onto completing step three below.

Third, if you don’t see the device in your bluetooth settings, please complete a factory reset. To reset your heart rate sensor:

  1. Remove the battery.
  2. Press the metal snaps that attach to the strap with your fingers for at least 10 seconds. This will complete the circuit.
  3. Then, wait 30 seconds and then put the battery back in. Note: After the reset you need to pair the sensor with your devices again.

Fourth, if this does not work, make sure to check the battery status or try a new battery (C2025 battery).

Lastly, if all else fails, please email us at help@hanuhrv.com

Basics

Hanu HRV is a powerful HRV biofeedback device with integrated breathwork, stress resilience measurement and detailed data capture. Its a complete HRV visibility tool.

Every metric we track is linked to mental health and is always interpreted in that context. We currently track:

1. Heart Rate Variability: As we become stressed, HRV will be reduced.

2. Heart Rate: As we become stressed, HR will increase.

As we progress on our Apple Health integration, we’ll have many more data points including the biological markers.

While Heart Rate (HR) looks at the average number of heart beats that occur in one minute, HRV (specifically RMSSD, Hanu’s predominant metric of the relaxation response) is a metric of the amount of time that occurs between adjacent heart beats. As we become more relaxed, we activate our parasympathetic nervous system which results in an increase in HRV. While this is a very simplified understanding of HRV, check out this article for a deep dive!

Unlike some wearable companies that do not provide a lot of value during waking hours, Hanu HRV is intended to be worn predominantly throughout the day. Think of us as your all-day stress monitor or coach. Keep in mind, you can monitor and train all-day, but it may be helpful to start your regimen with a short training.

Short answer, yes and no. Hanu is intended as a daytime device. But, if you are so inclined, you can wear your device at night and we will capture data. At this time, we are not tracking sleep stages.

We support only Apple and do not have plans to release a version for Android at this time.

Hanu HRV is a stand alone solution and does not integrate with other apps or aggregators like Apple Health.

Hanu HRV

Life Events is your way to log and track events that result in significant changes in your stress response. These are either prompted/generated by Hanu (we see changes in your biometrics) or they are user generated (by you). This is a great mechanism for tracking the “what” of stress. In other words, you can look back and see common themes/stressors/times in order to help you to improve your self-awareness.

While we are working on becoming immensely sophisticated in our ability to determine which events are detrimental or helpful to your health, we are not there yet. That is why we want you to tell us. Only you know whether or not your experience of an event was stressful or helpful. Here is a great example: You might have a tense discussion with a friend that causes you stress. Due to the stress, you might experience an increase in heart rate, a reduction in heart rate variability, and an increase in respiration. On the other hand, you might have an exciting discussion with a friend that results in the same changes in biometrics. Only YOU would be able to tell Hanu whether or not the event caused you stress or not.

Absolutely.

Hanu is all about creating tailored and personalized trainings based on your goals. When we see that you have fallen outside your normal range (based on your data averages), we will alert you that it may be beneficial to practice some breathwork/biofeedback. You can view data change from start to finish and compare these changes over sessions.

To be honest, we will not know if you are “stressed out.” We can make predictions as to whether or not your nervous system is responding in a way that indicates you might be stressed, but only you can tell whether or not you are stressed. Hanu does two things: creates better self-awareness and encourages better self-regulation.

Breath is the single greatest method of communicating with the nervous system and causing quick, efficient changes. Tuning into the breath is the quickest way to increase resilience when confronted with a stressor. Even if your HRV does not change, focusing on the breath is still an effective means of changing your body’s response to stress.

Hanu uses the most validated ECG/EKG on the market: the Polar H10. There is no other device on the market that is more accurate and validated for continuous capture. Your data is accurate.

This. Is. Normal.

For many of us, this is simply performance anxiety. That is, when we are being watched or we are watching ourselves, our behavior and physiology are impacted. If you find that measuring yourself in this way is making you feel more stressed, i.e., your metrics are not moving in the direction you desire, then try one of three things:

1. Toggle off your data capture in the app. Do a training session without data.

2. Follow the pacing of your phone (vibration) without viewing data metrics during a training

3. Focus on the breath to transition from doing to being. Focus on the sensation of the breath, the inhale and the exhale, and allow the biometric changes to be what they will be.

The Polar H10 Chest Strap

Hanu HRV supports ONLY the Polar H10 which is the gold standard in heart rate monitoring.

Simply size the Polar H10 strap to fit semi-snug, yet comfortable. The sensor the clips into the strap should be located just below the breasts and at the center of the breast place (sternum).

Note: In order for the device to connect and sync with Hanu HRV, it must be worn. The Polar H10 will not connect to a device if it is off the body.

Ever get sick of having to change your device every day? Every couple of hours? Well, we solved that problem.

No charging required, at all!

The Polar H10 uses a C2025 battery (watch battery that cost about $1.00) that lasts 400 hours of use! Again, that is 400 hours of data capture! Needless to say, you will be changing this batter quite often. But, if you need to, it is as simple as removing the old battery and placing in a brand new one.

Yep!

Waterproof up to 30M.

Absolutely. The Polar H10 was intended as a HR tracker for exercise. While our app does not track exercise performance, it may be interesting for you to continue to track HR and HRV changes during a workout.

These things are made to be put through the ringer. We encourage you to store these in a dry and cool place, but the reality is that these devices are quite resilient. I think they have been using our app.

Hanu HRV Data

Pretty simple answer here, we’re using your data to help you! Everything we collect will be used to create a personalized model that we can use to evaluate your ups and downs and help you along.

We will keep all your data until you tell us to stop keeping your data. As biohackers at heart, one of the best things we can do is to give you a long term horizon view of your biometric markers as they relate to stress resiliency and cognitive performance.

But, if you ever would like us to delete your data, we will be happy to do so. Please email us at help@hanuhealth.com

Absolutely not. We have no intentions to share your data with third parties. The only exception here will be when we partner with other software companies, you may elect to share your data. You will have to OPT IN for this to happen and we’ll make sure this is clear before that happens.
